Chapter Awards

The ACSM Northwest Chapter works diligently to recognize the service and leadership of its members and promote and support student travel and research endeavors. Each year, we provide funding for students to travel to the regional Annual Meeting and funding for research projects for undergraduate or graduate students.

Chapter Recognition Awards

Service Award

The ACSM Northwest Service Award is an honor for members who have provided exceptional service and/or leadership to the Chapter.

Criteria for nomination:

  • Nominee is a current member in good standing of the Chapter.
  • Nominee has provided outstanding service and/or leadership to the Chapter for at least 3 years, in multiple capacities (see examples below).
Lifetime Membership Award

The ACSM Northwest Lifetime Membership Award recognizes a lifetime commitment of outstanding leadership and service to the Chapter.

Criteria for nomination:

  • Nominee is a current member in good standing of the Chapter or is an officially retired member of the Chapter who was in good standing at the time of retirement.
  • Nominee has provided outstanding service and/or leadership to the Chapter for at least 10 years, in multiple capacities (see examples below).
  • Nominee has been an outstanding professional who has been in the field for at least 10 years, during which a strong commitment has been demonstrated to the Chapter and field of Sports Medicine.

Student Travel Awards

Deadline:

March 7, 2025 by 5 p.m. PST

Purpose:

To provide ACSM Northwest students with the financial support to attend the 2024 ACSM Northwest Regional Meeting to experience the educational atmosphere of ACSM and/or disseminate their research.

Award:

Three awards of up to $250 each will be offered. The award is to be used for travel, lodging, and food costs associated with travel to the ACSM Northwest Regional Meeting.

  1. Eligible students will be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in the field of exercise science and/or sports medicine within the ACSM Northwest region.
  2. Students must be current ACSM Northwest members. ACSM Northwest will confirm the student’s ACSM Nortwest membership prior to review and determination of awards.
  3. Students must be in good academic standing.
  4. The student’s application must have a faculty sponsor, who will provide a letter of support that meets the requirements set forth in the application.
  5. The ACSM Northwest Student Travel Award can be awarded only once to an individual.
  6. The ACSM Northwest Student Travel Award can only be awarded if the student presents at the Annual Meeting for which they received the award. Students who are previously granted an award, but fail to present, will no longer be eligible to receive the award.
  1. Applicants will submit a completed application form (1 page). Each section on the application must be completed and should follow this naming format: ACSM Northwest Student Travel Application_LastName.
  2. Applicants will submit a written statement detailing their professional goals and describing how attending the ACSM Northwest Annual Meeting will help advance their studies (350-word limit). The document should be follow this naming format: ACSM Northwest Student Travel Statement_LastName. Evaluation of the written statement will be based on clearly defined goals related to the field of exercise science and/or sports medicine, a clearly stated objective for attending the Northwest Annual Meeting, and demonstration of how attendance at this meeting further his/her studies and/or professional development.
  3. A one-page maximum letter of support/recommendation from a faculty sponsor must be included in the application. The letter must be on official departmental letterhead, signed by the faculty advisor, scanned, and submitted with the application. The letter of support should include an evaluation of the student, description of the value of participation in the regional meeting to the student’s academic and professional growth, and indication that the student is in good academic standing. The document should be follow this naming format: ACSM Northwest Student Travel Letter_LastName.

Student Research Awards

April 25, 2025 by 5 p.m. PST

Purpose:

To provide ACSM Northwest students with the financial support to conduct scientific research in line with the interests of ACSM. The research should be relevant to the area of physical activity and inactivity, exercise, sports, and sedentary lifestyles and in the context of addressing U.S. and global health objectives.

Award:

Two awards of up to a combined amount of $2,000 USD for a one-year period will be offered. The award is to be used for experimental subjects, supplies, small equipment needs, and travel to disseminate research findings.

  1. Eligible students will be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in the field of exercise science and/or sports medicine within the ACSM Northwest region.
  2. Students must be ACSM Northwest members. ACSM Northwest will confirm candidate’s ACSM membership prior to review and determination of awards. If you are not currently an ACSM Northwest student member, you can become a member of our chapter here.
  3. Students must be in good academic standing with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
  4. The student’s application must have a faculty sponsor, who will provide a letter of support that meets the requirements set forth in the application.
  5. The ACSM Northwest Student Research Award can be awarded only once to an individual.
  1. Applicants will submit a completed application form detailing the description of the study, significant literature in the field, and proposed budget costs. Title the application attachment ‘ACSMNW Student Research Award_LastName’ and submit as a word or PDF document.
  2. An up-to-date copy of the student’s curriculum vitae should be submitted in the application package. Title this file attachment ‘ACSMNW Student Research Award CV_LastName’ and submit as a word or PDF document.
  3. A one-page maximum letter of support/recommendation from a faculty sponsor must be included in the application. The letter must be on official departmental letterhead, signed by the faculty advisor, scanned, and emailed with the application. The recommendation letter should include the contribution of the proposed study to the field, relevance of the proposed study to the student’s academic career, the feasibility of the student to carry out the proposed work in the time frame and with the proposed budget, and indication that the student is in good academic standing (i.e., GPA of 3.0 or higher). Title this file attachment ‘ACSMNW Student Research Award Letter_LastName’ and submit as a word or PDF document.
